With over 17 years experience in the sake industry, self-proclaimed "Sake Chris" was wooed into the world of sake during a tenure at a Japanese food and drink importer in London by the charismatic president of sake brewery, Mr.Kuji of Nanbu Bijin.

He has not looked back since. Since moving to Japan in 2014, he has visited close to 200 breweries, worked a Tokyo-based sales position for two sake breweries in Yamagata Prefecture including Kojima Sohonten (makers of Toko); written for various sake media; worked in a marketing role, including organizing events for sake bar chain; and continues to provide consulting for sake breweries and shochu distilleries.

He is also a presenter on the world's first podcast dedicated to expanding the dialogue on sake and he is a qualified sake teacher for a major sake qualification in Tokyo.

Testimonials

"Completely exceeded our expectations. Never knew a sake experience could be so much fun and didn't know it went so well with food. Chris is a master of his craft."

Rodney and Christine, USA

"Chris's enthusiasm and love for sake is infectious and he manages to make the complex subject of 'brewing' easily accessible and entertaining. We were blown away by his knowledge and all our (somewhat negative) misconceptions about sake were explained. The sake and pairings were well above what we expected in terms of quality and quantity. The owner was brilliant and the venue was perfect, offering a small secluded area for our session. Overall this was a highlight for us and would thoroughly recommend Chris's sake sampling session to others."

Martin & Rebecca, UK

"Thanks again for hosting us at Gashue - it was the highlight of our time in Tokyo. Lindsay and I were blown away by the exceptional food and sake pairings, and we really enjoyed our time with you. We will share your contact info far and wide!"

Warren & Lindsay, USA

"My son, son-in-law and I had the pleasure of a sake tasting with Chris Hughes last month when we visited Japan. The restaurant was welcoming with delicious pairings along with each sake experience, every one better than the last! Chris brought to life the history of sake-making and the restaurant made the experience memorable. Kako Fumiaki topped off the evening with photos for us! I highly recommend this experience!"
